Root Canal FAQ: What You Need to Know

Our Dentist in Mexico Has the Answers

Root Canal in MexicoDo the words “root canal” frighten you? Reassure yourself by learning the answers to some basic questions, courtesy of Mexico Dental Implantss Center:

What is a root canal? A root canal is a treatment for removing infection within the tooth. The inside of a tooth contains a pulp chamber filled with nerves; when decay or damage breaches the enamel, bacteria can invade the chamber and cause serious pain and damage all the way down to the roots. A root canal procedure allows us to save the tooth instead of extracting it.

How does treatment for a root canal work? Our dentist in Mexico must treat any infection or abscess in the tooth or gums before moving on to the actual root canal procedure. We do this by opening the tooth so the infection can drain. Once we have administered the anesthetic, we will open the top of the tooth and hollow out the pulp chamber completely. We then reinforce the tooth by filling it up with a solid resin. The addition of a crown helps to strengthen the visible portion of the tooth and keep the pulp chamber clean and disease free.

Is it painful? The root canal itself is performed under a local anesthetic to block pain signals. You might experience some discomfort for a few days afterward, but this is normal inflammation and should be manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers. If you continue to have discomfort after several days, we may need to take the crown off and treat the inside of the tooth with pain deadening medication, and then add a new crown. Our dentist in Mexico is happy to do this extra work free of charge to ensure that you have a lasting positive experience.
